Will Smith - from $0 to the top
Will Smith, the legendary actor and hip hop artist, was almost bankrupt in 1990 when NBC signed him up and built a sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, around him. The show was extremely successful and it launched the career of one of the greatest actors of the last ten years plus.
An ambitious hard worker, at the start of his acting career. Smith set his goal to become "the biggest movie star in the world." Smith's film career took off with his role in the buddy cop action film Bad Boys (1995) along with co-star Martin Lawrence. From the on he became a top comic actor both on the small screen and the big screen.
Will Smith the music artist began a successful solo music career after the conclusion of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in May 1996. Still appearing in movies, his first two were blockbusters: Independence Day (1996), Men in Black (1997). Interestingly, it took his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, to coax him into accepting the role in MIB after he originally turned it down.
Smith is a record-breaker in a number of spheres, one being one of only two hip-hop artists to receive an Oscar nomination in an acting category for Best Actor in Ali about Muhammad Ali (2001).
