Install Several Desktop Environments in Ubuntu: Gnome, KDE and XFCE

In this post we will see how we can install different desktop environments (Gnome, KDE and XFCE) in Ubuntu. Depending on what flavor of the operating system is installed, comes with a default environment or another:

Ubuntu comes default with Gnome.
Kubuntu brings KDE default.
Xubuntu comes with XFCE.

There are many more environments for GNU / Linux and anyone can settle in Ubuntu, but these three are the most popular and why we focus more on them.

Installation of different environments: Gnome, KDE and XFCE

Having many different desks available is very good because the user can choose what you want to use from among all possibilities, what best suits their needs and personal interests. However, there is a constant debate about whether Ubuntu should provide a different way than maintaining several different flavors of the same operating system, making a minimal system with few units and then the user can select the environment you want to use, but everything inside in the same facility (trying to centralize efforts and avoid having multiple versions of the OS separately). It is a very open debate and recurring in forums and in the brainstorm of Ubuntu.

Of course, since any of the different flavors of Ubuntu can be installed all the desks so we can try them all and choose the best option. That said, if you're sure what's your favorite environment the best recommendation is to install a clean (from the installation CD) system in its proper version.

To get KDE in the system should install kubuntu-desktop. For Gnome, the package is called ubuntu-desktop, and in the case of XFCE is Xubuntu-desktop. These packages are special, because all depend on them very well and you come to update system. They are available in the repositories, for example to install KDE is run:

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

During installation will ask us what we want session manager is running by default, if KDM (desktop KDE) or GDM (Gnome).

Once installed packages of the type .. desktop, to go to enter the user name and password, you can choose the type of meeting on screen access to the system (in this case is GDM):

To switch from one desk to another no more than to log off to return to the home screen and choose another location from the list in the session manager.

Clear menus

A few months ago and commented on Genbeta two small programs to be able to live with menus in an organized manner on a system with Gnome and KDE installed. Both applications create an entry for KDE or Gnome on the main menu which includes all programmes of another well-organized environment.

Christer Edwards wrote long ago a script called Menu Cleaner for each application Gnome and KDE will appear only in the corresponding desktop, making a backup just in case previously. If you want to try it, you can simply download and run from a terminal through the command:
sh. / menu-cleaner.sh

Ubuntu puts us very easy to install other desks, so we have no excuse to not try.
